Hello. I have been suffering from an ever worsening condition of chronic pancreatitis. The very first time I had any problem whatsoever with pancreatitis was 9 years ago starting with repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis, mostly due to an inherited condition as well as a extreme persistant high level of triglycerides. I am now at present in constant severe chronic pain and have been unable to work because of it. Since August of 2008 I have been collecting Social Security disability benefits. Needless to say, the progression of my disease and constant worsening of my pain has had disasterous effects on my personal life. After being married for 19 years, I now find myself divorced for the past 3 months after being seperated for 6 months prior. I woud just like to talk to others that have similiar circumstances as I do. Feel free to reply with anything. |

| I'm not familiar with pancreatitis. There are so many pain-causing things out there. Could you describe more of the type of suffering you have. I have been through a divorce, so I can relate to that. |

Thanks for the reply. First let me say that pancreatic pain is considered to be some of the worst to suffer from. Especially pain associated with acute pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. When you suffer from acute pancreatitis, your pancreatic enzymes, namely your Amylase and lipase, are elevated and what basically happens is your pancreas starts to digest itself. If that is any indication as to the severity of the pain. After repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis, your pancreas becomes damaged and thus a chronic, constant severe pain presents itself. My pain never goes away, I can lessen the severity with narotic pain medication, but never get rid of it. It has become very depressing also. |

| I'm truly sorry to hear about your situation. I'm sure you are dealing directly with the medical aspects of your condition, but please also remember to look ahead so that you can prepare for, or even avoid, other adverse effects. You mentioned that your condition is depressing; most chronic pain-related ordeals eventually lead to that state of mind. Unfortunately, depression is one of the biggest adverse effects of chronic pain. Avoid it like the plague! Fight it from the beginning. Interact with people (even though most non-sufferers don't have a clue as to what you're going through), read uplifting books, watch good movies, etc. If you're religious–pray a lot! If you're not, I'll pray for you. Entertain yourself: for every negative thought or action, bring in two positive ones.
It helps to vent on forums like this. Come back often, and recommend it to other sufferers. |

Sometimes having someone to talk to who can identify with my situation helps me feel better. There are many aspects of my illness that tend to cause depression also. I will not get inro them right now, but would like to chat with someone like yourself sometime in the near future. Thank you very much for your reply and words of encouragement. God Bless you. |

I have not been diagnosed with pancreatitis and while I am usually hesitant to discuss something undiagnosed, I am 99.99% sure this is my issue.
It used to be horrible, on a daily basis about 10 years ago. They said is was my gallbladder. It was removed, the pain remained. But it was a LOT less frequent.
I am good at controlling it for the most part. Fatty foods will set it off. As will chocolate and codiene.
I took a Tylonal 3 a week ago and wow, it set it off like crazy. I have know for a long time codeine will do it, but I needed it for a different pain and thought one pill would not hurt.
It has been a week and I am still suffering from it. The excruciating attacks has stopped but after I eat it feels like I have eaten glass.
When I have an attack, it lasts for about 10-15 minutes. Stops for about 5-10 minutes then hits again. It cycles likes this for hours.
The pain sends me writhing to the floor. I scream and at times am unable to talk. It is severe.
I have multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and a chronic headache. I KNOW PAIN. But this... this is the worst. I swear it is worse than childbirth.
So I just want to say. I FEEL YOUR PAIN.
I have decided to stop ignoring this and get an actual diagnosis. I attempted 10 years ago but was told it was just my gallbladder, but that can no longer be the case as it is taken out. And another doctor said it was just irritable bowel syndrome. Uh, no, none of the symptoms. He did not run tests or anything. Just gave me the diagnoses and collected his money.
Best of luck to all of you.
-Tara

A very big thank you to all that have submitted responses to my post. As of my last submission I have been hospitalized for a week in November 2009. A week in December 2009, including Christmas Day. And I just got home yesterday from another weeks stay at Florida Hospital DeLand. My weight has plummeted to a very thin 137 lbs. Several years ago I was a healthy 215 lbs. I am also now up to 5 tablets of 30mg Oxycodone a day. Pretty hard not to get depressed under these conditions. But the strong "have" to survive. And if I am stubborn, a trait handed down from my father, then I am strong! We shall see. Again, a huge group hug and thank you to all the kind words. Please feel free to send more responses. I look forward to all. |

I hope this thread can come back to life. About 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis after an endoscopy was done on me. It is no soprise to me as I kind of expected it. Ive suffered with what felt like gall bladder attacks for a long time even tho I no longer have a gall bladder. I call them gall bladderLESS attacks. So far I only have it mildly. If this is what mild feels like Im scared to see how it will feel like later on down the road. This chronic pancreatitis mostly hurts in my back and sometimes in the front. Certain positions make the pain better and some make it worse. I feel the pain daily. And when it doesnt hurt I often feel the pancreas tingle as if it is letting me know it is there and agrivated. Ive lost 14 pounds recently because the pain strongly encourages me to eat little and when I do eat it is mostly veggies, fruit and broth. It seems like meat, starch, fats, processed foods, sweets, dairy and high carbs make that awful pancreas pain hurt so bad. Standing to long hurts, sitting up for to long hurts, working hurts it, standing and slightly leaning forward (like doing dishes) hurts it. Standing and bending way over to touch the floor makes it feel better. I have pain meds for the pancreatitis that disolve under the tongue for fast aborption and pain relief. I feel kind of alone in this. I dont drink and Im female age 39. It seems as if most of the info I find on chronic pancreatitis applies to men who drink a lot. It is likely and suspected that the reason I am a double brittle diabetic is because of this chronic pancreatitis. I was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago. I sometimes wonder things like: -how will I deal with the pain once the pancreatitis gets worse? -how much will this shorten my life? -how will this change life for me? -do I need to make a will in case I die soon? -what kind of mother and wife can I be once the pain gets worse? -what pain meds help with this? -will my husband and kids get sick of me being sick? |
